Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania Tour 16 days, 15 nights

Safari starts in Kigali and ends in Bujumbura

It gives clients an opportunity to discover the best of the 3 countries. It starts with the wildlife and birds in Akagera National Park in the east with its beautiful wetland savannah .continues with a cultural and historical visit of Burundi, and ends with a wildlife visit of Tanzania.

The highlight of the safari tracking the mountain gorillas in Parc National des Volcans (PNV) in the Virunga volcanoes in the northwest. Rwanda has ten habituated gorilla families and tracking most groups in the afro-montane forest usually takes only a few hours.

You can also climb a volcano; visit the Diana Fossey tombs with other gorillas plus the endangered golden monkeys. You continue to Nyungwe, in southern Rwanda, a massive afro-montane forest, the largest in East and Central Africa. The forest has 13 primate species including chimpanzee and large groups of Black and White colobus monkeys. Other attractions are 278 bird species and a variety of orchids and butterflies.

Burundi has not a big number of Beautiful landscapes, forests, lakes, beaches, traditions, etc. and .......... millions of smiles from the friendly natives of Burundi.
This is still Africa at its purest!!

Enjoy the drummers, who can entertain and show you how drumming should be done. There are no other African drummers like these men and boys, who show that their drum is their heart and soul.

Crossing the border From Burundi to Tanzania through Lake Tanganyika to Gombe stream to track chimps while camping will leave a mark of memory to the tourist visit the Great Lakes Region-East Africa.

Day 1: Arrival

You will be met on arrival at airport and then transfer to Kigali. You will get briefed about your safari and after lunch, depart for Akagera. Go for an evening boat ride and have a chance to see some schools of hippos, the giant Nile crocodiles, over 525 species of birds etc. Overnight and dinner at Akagera Game Lodge

Day 2: Game drives

Game drives in the park to see some of the 12 species of antelopes, birds, elephants, zebras, leopard, and lions etc; some reptiles and amphibians etc. Overnight and dinner at Akagera Lodge

Day 3: Travel to Kinigi

Early start for Kinigi. The journey north goes through the beautiful terraced hillsides that show much of Rwanda landscape, gradually climbing to the base of the awesome volcanoes. You will have lunch on arrival at Musanze. Overnight at Volcanoes Bamboo Lodge

Day 4: Gorilla Tracking

Go for gorilla tracking in Parc National des Volcan. Tracking the gorillas through the mountain forest of the Virunga is a wonderful experience. Spend time with the gorillas (takes about I hour), and be back at the lodge for lunch. Some gorilla families however are more elusive, and tracking can take a full day, especially when it is wet and muddy. Overnight and dinner at Volcanoes Bamboo Lodge

Day 5: Golden Monkeys

Visit the golden monkeys in the morning then drive to Gisenyi afterwards; visit Ross Carr’s orphanage and Lake Kivu OR climb either Bisoke or Muhavura volcano OR visit the tombs of Dian Fossey with other gorillas. Last option, visit local schools, community projects OR either walk or ride bikes to the twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. Overnight at Volcanoes Bamboo Lodge

Day 6: Drive to Nyungwe

Early start for Nyungwe. Visit the old king’s palace in Nyanza. Drive past green hills of tea and the vast Nyungwe Forest. Overnight at Gisakura guest house

Day 7: Forest Walk

Go on an escorted walk in search of the large groups of Colobus monkeys and birds including the Rwenzori turaco. Or go chimp tracking and have picnic lunch. Return late afternoon. Overnight at Gisakura guest house .

Day 8: Guided nature walks in the forest or go chimp tracking

Overnight and dinner at Gisakura Guest House 

Day 9: Depart for Burundi

Drive for Burundi, arrive in the afternoon in Bujumbura ,check in at Hotel club du lac Tanganyika. 

Day 10: Bujumbura city tour

Morning after breakfast tour of Bujumbura, we visit Rusizi national park where a boat ride in Rusizi river will let you explore closer the hippo, numerous birds and the joining point between Rusizi River and Lake Tanganyika;

Visit of some local people of Bujumbura to learn about daily work,life; Belvedere Climb offering a nice view of Bujumbura city ,Independance hero mounument.After we visit explorers Memorial, a huge rock in the Suburbs of Bujumbura commemorating the meeting between explorers Stanley and Livingstone. Lunch at the Hotel or in Cozy restaurant of the City. 

Afternoon, visit of BRARUDI (Brewery Company) the only company producing beer (Primus & Amstel) which is very popular in the country but also in Rwanda and DRC.

Full information will be provided about its great contribution in Burundi economy.

Dinner and overnight at Club du Lac Tanganyika Hotel on Bed & Breakfast basis.

Day 11: Mwaro waterfalls-Source of Nile-Karera waterfalls

After breakfast, we take the direction to Mwaro Province: Visit of Agasumo ka Mwaro”Mwaro Waterfalls” a place where Burundians were worshipping their God”Kiranga” before Christianity.

We continue our trip to Source of Nile, and then Karera waterfalls .On our route, magnificent tea plantations and landscapes will make you carry your camera ready for pictures. 

After karera waterfalls, drive to Gitega, the second town and colonial capital of Burundi. Visit of Gitega National Museum with its collection of artefacts, Gitega city administrative offices,Catholic location of Mushasha and its different schools, Overnight at Orange or Helena Hotel.

Day 12: Community Tour -Drum sanctuary-King Palace

After breakfast visit of the local people Batwa”pygmies” and learn about their way of life .Most of batwa community is living of potery, since Hunting is almost inexistent nowadays in Burundi.

After visit of the drum sanctuary of Gishora. Gishora is one of the famous drum sites of Burundi. Gishora is perched on the top of a hill at 7km from the urban centre of Gitega The site of Gishora also houses two ritual drums that were never beaten : Ruciteme (the one for whom we clear the forest) and Murimirwa (the one for whom we cultivate). The two names are intimately linked to the farming vocation and refer clearly to the fertility, characteristic of the king. We have also ordinary drums which the Batimbo could beat on special occasions of the country.

Visit the drum sanctuary of Gishora to relive the cultural tradition of Burundi which is becoming scarcer. The site recreates an architectural complex of Royal palace, rarely found elsewhere in the country. Get there a lot of information will be provided by Mr Antime who has travelled a lot of countries across the world exhibiting the image of Burundi with his drum.

Drive towards Bujumbura, relax at the beach using sports facilities as well as swimming pool,gym,sauna,tennis court, and overnight at Club du lac Tanganyika

Day 13: Gombe stream national park-Tanzania

After breakfast, drive towards Nyanza-Lac to catch the boat ahead to Gombe National Park. Arrival afternoon, Camping in the park.

Day 14: Full day in Gombe stream

It's a great place to see chimps up close and personal as many of the family groups are habituated to humans.Camping in the park.

Day 15: Mvugo Local fisherm -Mugara Hotsprings

After breakfast, we take a boat back to Nyanza Lac,visit of Mvugo local fishermen.

Visit of Mugara hotsprings an authentic hot (swimming) pool with 48 degree Celsius, this basin is acknowledged by the neighbouring and even distant population since time immemorial for its therapeutic quality against rheumatism and indigestion.

Stop at Tanganyika Blue Bay Resort for relax and lunch. Afteroon drive back to Bujumbura and overnight at Club du lac Tanganyika

Day 16: Check out and airport transfer
